Text Box: Harry McAfee - Director of Bands Text Box: In his eighth year at Hoover High School, Harry McAfee has had 35 years experience as band director at Bottenfield Junior High, Minor, Gardendale, Shades Valley, and now Hoover High School.  In his eleven years at Shades Valley High School he implemented a team teaching concept that built the band from 29 members to over 230.  His bands have always received highest ratings on both the concert stage and the marching field.   Mr. McAfee received his Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Montevallo.  He also earned a Master of Science Degree at the University of Illinois placing emphasis on instrumental conducting and literature.  He is retired from the U.S. Army Reserve after 26 years of service with the 313th Army Band.  In the December 2003 edition of School Band and Orchestra Magazine, Mr. McAfee was included in the sixth annual 50 Directors Who Make a Difference feature, which spotlights one director from each state in the nation for their dedication to music education. Memberships include the Alabama Music Educators, Music Educators National Conference, The National Band Association, The International Trumpet Guild, and Phi Beta Mu Honorary Band Directors Fraternity. Under his leadership the Hoover Band has marched in the Macy’s Parade, The Easter Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, and most recently in the 2006 Tournament of Roses Parade. Mr. McAfee is currently serving a two year term as President of the Alabama Bandmaster's Association.  Mr. McAfee is an active member of the Birmingham Musicians Union and plays with the Celebration Winds Community Band, the Trinity Brass Quintet, Summerfest, local shows and church work, and as an extra with the Alabama Symphony.  He is also a member and director of the orchestra at Metropolitan Church of God.  Mr. McAfee and his wife Amy have two daughters, Kate age 11 and Erin age 9.
