Harry McAfee is the Director of Bands at Hoover High School.  He comes to Hoover High School from Shades Valley High School in Birmingham where in his eleven years as head director, the band program grew from 30 to well over 200 students.

His previous teaching experiences (over thirty years) include Minor High School, Bottenfield Junior High, and Gresham Middle School.  His professional affiliations include MENC, ABA, AMEA, ITG, and NBA

 
Dennis Carroll has been with the Hoover City School System since its inception.  While in Hoover, he has taught at Berry High School, Simmons Middle School, and Hoover High School.  Previous teaching experience began 1976 at Phil Campbell High School (Alabama) followed by W.P. Davidson High School (Mobile, Alabama) and McAdory High School (Birmingham, Alabama).  

Mr. Carroll received his Bachelor in Music Education from the University of Alabama (1976) and his Masters in Music Education from the University of North Alabama (1979).  His professional affiliations include AMEA, ABA, MENC, ITG, AEA, and NEA.  He is an active performer  throughout the Birmingham area with the Birmingham Brass Quintet.  His primary responsibilities at HHS include the Concert Band II and the Hoover Jam Jazz Ensemble.

Sallie Vines White is in her nineteenth year of teaching.  She received her B.A. in Music Education and Psychology from Anderson University (Indiana) in 1982.  She completed her Masters Degree in 1985 from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.  While at Indiana, she studied jazz arranging, composition, improvisation, and pedagogy with David Baker and Dominic Spera.

Mrs. White's duties at Hoover High School include Concert Band I, AP Music Theory, assisting with Marching Band, and the First Edition Jazz Ensemble.  She is also an adjunct faculty member at Samford University teaching saxophone.  In the recent past, she taught Jazz Ensemble at the University of Montevallo, UAB, and Samford University.  She has been called on to guest conduct several honor bands including Gadsden State, and District II, V, and VII Junior High Honor Bands.  Her professional affiliations include MENC, ABA, AFM, AEA, NEA, and IAJE in which she served as the Alabama Chapter president from 1989-1991.

She remains an active performer on the woodwind instruments.  As a free lance musician, she has played concerts with Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Harry Connick Jr., Joan Rivers, Bob Hope, Glen Campbell, and many others.  Currently, she performs with the Cahaba Saxophone Quartet on the tenor saxophone. 

 

Jeff Fondren is an Assistant Director of Bands at Hoover High School and is in charge of all aspects of Percussion development at Hoover High School, Simmons Middle School and Bumpus Middle School.

Mr. Fondren is a graduate of the University of North Alabama with his MME and Masters in Music Performance from Eastern Kentucky University.  AA Certification was received from the University of Alabama.  He is a past percussion arranger and instructor with Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps (1993-1997).  

His professional affiliations include PAS, AMEA, ABA, MENC, AEA, and International Association of Rudimental Percussionists.

 

Kim Bain is the Director of Bands at R. F. Bumpus Middle School in Hoover and an associate director at Hoover High School.  Prior to her appointment at R. F. Bumpus Middle School in 1999, she taught at Oak Mountain Middle School where her bands received consistent superior ratings at District and State Contests.  In January of 2001, she was selected as a finalist for the Birmingham Post-Herald Distinguished Teacher Award.  In 2002, she was awarded membership in the Jacksonville State University Teacher Hall of Fame as a Middle School inductee.

She received her Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, and Education Specialist degrees from the University of Alabama and also holds a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from Bowling Green State University.  In addition to her teaching activities, Ms. Bain is an active performer in the Birmingham area with such groups as the Friends in Jazz Quartet, Cahaba Saxophone Quartet, and the Alabama Symphony.  Her professional affiliations include MENC, ABA, and IAJE.

Chris Neugent is the Director of Bands at Simmons Middle School in Hoover and an associate director at Hoover High School..  He is beginning his first year as Simmons' Band Director.  He graduated with honors from the University of Alabama with a B.S. in Instrumental Music Education and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in music education from the same institution.  He has a wonderful wife, Angie.  They have a dog, Skipper, and a rabbit, Floppy.

Prior to coming to Hoover, Chris was the Assistant Director of Bands at Oak Grove High School where he was responsible for teaching and administration of the middle school band program.  While at Oak Grove High School, the middle school program flourished including the band's first appearance at District and State Band Competition in the school's long history.  Both appearances resulted in a Superior Rating. 

 

Lindsay Coker is the Buccanettes instructor at Hoover High School.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Comprehensive Language Arts from the University of Alabama. Prior to joining the Hoover High School Band as instructor for the Buccanettes, she was the Jazz and Solo Dance instructor and the Competition Choreographer for the Birmingham Dance Theatre. She was also the Cheerleading Dance Choreographer for Minor High School where her squad earned first place overall at the Universal Cheerleading Camp.

She choreographed numerous award winning dance events and was recognized for her academic achievements by being named to the Dean's List and President's List while at the University of Alabama.

 

Jennifer Carden is the color guard instructor at Hoover High School.  She has marched at the high school and college levels.  She is a graduate of Auburn University where she was the color guard captain.  More bio information is on the way.
Marcie Jones is the color guard instructor at Hoover High School.  She has marched at the high school and college levels.  She is also a past member of the 27th Lancers Drum and Bugle Corps.
Adrian Fitchpatrick is the color guard instructor at Hoover High School.  She was a member of the color guard at Pope High School in Marietta, Georgia.  She is a graduate of Samford University, where she was the captain and choreographer.  She has also choreographed for a number of color guards in the Birmingham area over the past 8 years.  Her training comes from participation in both drum corps and winter guard.  In addition to her color guard abilities, she also has 15 years of training in ballet and jazz.
